Bacteriological Testing

SAMPLING INSTRUCTIONS
FOR
BACTERIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF DRINKING WATER
Total Coliform Bacteria and E. coli

Neilson Research Corporation recommends that you have your private well tested twice a year for Total Coliform Bacteria and E. coli. The best time to conduct these tests are during the summer months when the water table is low and again during the winter months when the water table is high.

Proper sampling techniques are extremely important in obtaining accurate water quality information.  Only use the sample containers provided Neilson Research Corporation.  Before you begin, please read all of these instructions.  Remember, do not remove the cap from the bottle until just before you are ready to sample.

SAMPLING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Before collecting a sample for bacteriological analysis, you must first obtain a STERILE SAMPLE BOTTLE and lab report form from the laboratory. Neilson Research Corporation can not accept samples collected in your own container for this analysis.

2. Select a cold water tap that is used frequently, but avoid using the kitchen sink faucet if at all possible. If the sampling tap has a screen or an aerator, please remove it. If you are using an outside tap, disconnect any hoses or other attachments. Flaming the faucet is not necessary.

3. Run the cold water at a relatively high flow for 3 to 6 minutes to clear the line. Reduce the flow to a smooth-flowing water stream so it doesn't splash.

4. Note the 100 ml mark on the sterile sample bottle. The white powder or tablet must remain in the container. DO NOT RINSE THE CONTAINER. Carefully open the bottle, keeping hands away from the inside of the cap or the bottle rim. Fill the plastic container between the two lines on bottle. DO NOT UNDER FILL. A minimum of 100 ml sample is required. If overfilled, DO NOT POUR OUT EXCESS. If the sample is above the fill line, (120 ml) there may be an additional fee to adjust the volume.

5. Fill out the information section on the left side of the form enclosed with the container. Legibly print your name and mailing address in the lower box as it will appear in the window of the return envelope.

6. Your sample must be kept cool at all times and must be received by the laboratory within 24 hours from the time of "collection". All samples must be kept cold and brought to the laboratory in a cooler or on ice. All non-chilled samples will be REFUSED.

7. Analysis time is 24 hours, and the results will be mailed directly to the address noted in the lower portion of the report form.
